Jan 30, 2009Used migration assistant to move my Blackbook apps and settings to the Air using a Time Machine backup from my Time Capsule - wirelessly. Two hours later (not terrible) and I'm using my Air with all my apps and setting - fantastic.
Question: My Blackbook also has a Bootcamp partition running Windows - is there a way to take that image and migrate it to my MB Air? I'd rather not have to purchase the Superdrive and re-install/setup the Windows OS on my Air....

I know for desktops it's very silly to buy the higher end cpu, because a little overclocking will give the exact same performance. Anyone knows if the same holds true for laptop CPU. ( I think the i5 2.4 ghz and 2.53 are identical except in clock speed, so a little overclock to 2.53 ghz should atleast be possible right? ) And are there guides on how to overclock on a Mac/OS X?

Apr 11, 2009I occasionally get the BSOD sometimes on the Windows XP side of things in Boot Camp. I always use a mouse on the Windows side, as the trackpad is very glitchy and buggy. Sometimes, when I use the mouse for a prolonged period of time, I accidently touch the trackpad forgetting all of the sudden that i had the mouse (or i use it to scroll down) and the whole thing blue screens on me. It has happened 8 times already, each time blue screening after touching the mouse. I don't know why, but I find out that the mouse drivers are the one that is messing up my Windows XP SP3.

May 20, 2009I have a Macbook Pro 15' , C2D 2.33ghz. I have the 7100 version of Windows 7 and everything worked perfectly except for the sound.
No matter which bootcamp driver I try or even Realtek's own vista one nothing works.
I downloaded the bootcamp 2.1 drivers and everything installed correctly , including the realtek ones. All the hardware looks fine in device manager but I dont hear anything out.
Should the default be speakers? It seems that it keeps the driver as microsofts own and it doesnt say anything about realtek. Could that be the problem?
I did not try the microphone jack yet but will in a few minutes.
Even if there is a hack , Im willing to try it. What is the exact audio chipset on this model of macbook pro?

Oct 21, 2009I have today received a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, and am looking forward to installing it on my MacBook (early unibody version with Core 2 Duo processor, recently upgraded to Snow Leopard - version MacBook 5,1 - with 2.4GHz Processor and 4GB RAM).
The question is simple, but I am utterly confused when searching for the answer...!
Should I install the 32bit or the 64bit version of windows? (both the disks are in the box). I would like a smooth installation, and realise that 32bit should work no problem. However if all the drivers are available for 64bit windows, and it works then I see no reason not to install that version. I am confused because there is reference on the Apple website of this version of the MacBook not being supported for 64bit despite having a 64bit processor (??) Also the vast majority of the information on the Apple website seems to refer to Vista 64bit. I imagine that this will be quite confusing for many users, as it has been for me!
I will only install windows once, and would obviously like to install the potentially faster OS if it will be straightforward, and everything will work as it should (have read about problems with the iSight/backlit keyboard etc. - but these may now be fixed).

Jan 23, 2009I want to try out Windows 7. During this process though I deleted my winXP partition. When I went to create a new BootCamp partition in The BootCamp SetUp Assisstant, it failed to create the partition on my harddrive.
I was greeted with the error, 'BootCamp SetUp assistant failed to yada yada yada, please backup and reformat your harddrive.'
So my question is do I really have to reinstall Mac OS X? (I backup with TimeMachine so it won't be a big deal but still thats a very long process.) Do you guys have any tips or anything to get Mac OS X to partition my main HDD?

May 30, 2010I would first like to start off with the disclaimer that I am not good at writing guides and I am also not a pro with overclocking but here is my attempt at both. Also I am not liable for damages to your computer and ask fobis has mentioned each gpu even if they are the same may overclock better or worse then the next. So take my overclocking numbers for what they are worth. Experiment and try it out on your own.
Note: This guide assumes your running Windows 7 64bit, and also it assumes that you are new to overclocking.
-------------------------------GUIDE------------------------------
1.First make sure you have a copy of windows installed through bootcamp.
2.Then go ahead and install the drivers that came with bootcamp ( we won't be using the gpu drivers but the rest are going to be useful anyway so might as well go ahead and install them )
3.After you have all that you will want to go here to get a modified driver. This will give you better performance then the bad drivers that apple supplies it will also let you overclock the gpu
4.After you have downloaded both the driver and the INF file open up the driver and it will extract the files to the directory that you choose. It will also try to launch the install but it will fail saying something like ' no compatible hardware found ' ignore this for now.
5.Now take the INF file and copy it to the folder that the driver was extracted too. It will ask you if you want to overwrite the file just say yes.
6.Now open up the device manager by right clicking on my computer, selecting properties, this should open a new window and on the left there should be something that says device manager.
7.Under the tab that says 'display adapters' select the only device that shows up on that tab. Right click it and choose uninstall.
8.After you have done that it will likely mess up your resolution and set it too 800x600 don't worry this is normal. Now just restart your computer.
9.Once you have restarted when it starts back up it will say new hardware found. Now you have to choose to install it manually choose the option that says something along the lines of ' search for drivers in specified area '
10.Now it will take you to a new page and on that page there should be an option that says 'have disk' choose this and select the directory that you extracted the driver too earlier in this guide. It should find one of the files that it can use and install it just fine.
11.You will need to restart again once this is done but when you start back up your resolution should be fixed if not just right click and hit screen resolution and just change it back to the native resolution.
12. Download Nvidia system tools found here
13. Go ahead and install this it should be self explanatory.
14. Once it is installed open the program and go to the performance tab on the left. ( It might ask you to agree to some terms of use )
15. Just put in these numbers and hit apply
646 for the first one
864 for the second one
and 1314 for the third one
Now your done if your paranoid like me of overheating your computer you can also optionally download and install LubbosFanControl to max out your fans to keep it as cool as possible.

Another note: The highest GPU temp underload from Crysis got up to about 78C after about 15mins of running the game. Furmark got the temp up to 80C though after about 15mins also.
I have also played TF2 at max settings @ 1920x1200 for over 2 hours to test stability and it ran fine without any hiccups
Also I feel that this card can be pushed further then this ( I have not tried ) but from what I see it cools a lot better then I expected from a laptop I come from a world of desktop overclocking.

Aug 28, 2009Maybe I'm just over thinking this, but Apple never posted a KB article about how to upgrade an existing bootcamp partition with the new snow leopard bootcamp 3.0 drivers. I'm assuming if you already have bootcamp 2.1 you boot up in boot camp and then insert the snow leopard disc in order to upgrade the drivers to 3.0 correct? Or do I have to erase my stupid bootcamp partition and reinstall it all over again using the new leopard boot camp assistant in order to get to 3.0?

I was playing tf2 under Os X and the performance is just a tiny bit too low for good playing, i feel like a tiny overclock of the 1.4 ghz cpu would greatly help. Knowing how to overclock a laptop processor allows you fine tune your laptop hardware components to give you maximum productivity and efficiency.
Usually done to boost your processor performance over super intensive tasks like image rendering, transcoding and even bitcoin mining; overclocking involves adjusting memory settings, core, power and voltage for an unlocked processor, motherboard and the RAM of your laptop.
The simple trick is drain out every ounce of performance from your system by maximizing the frequency of the processor, maximizing overall voltage supplied while quickly dissipating off generated heat. If you can keep the right balance, you will be good to go.
Overclocking is a good idea to boost performance of your laptop without digging so much inside your pockets, however, it renders your warranty void because you are running your system way beyond its recommended specifications by the manufacturer.
Any slight mistake made trying to overclock your system, may destroy your processor for good. So ensure you do it the right way.

How do you overclock a laptop with an Intel processor?
First you will need to understand the fact that even if all Intel processors can be overclocked, it only recommends overclocking only its unlocked processors.
Manufacturers design processors to perform below their capabilities to avoid failure. A system labeled 3.0GHz may be set to perform at 2.5GHz after a test; which is well below its capability.
By adjusting the factors affecting clock speed, we can push the processor performance way above its limitations by design.
So what will you need to overclock your laptop?
- A fully functioning windows laptop
- A motherboard adapted to overclocking
- An advanced cooling system
- Robust ATX power supply
- Software tool (Intel Extreme Tuning Utility)
Step By Stepto overclock an Intel laptop processor
Step 1: Test the stability of your system
Before we proceed with the idea of overclocking, we need to test whether the system is stable at both idle state and maximum load.
There is a free third party tool (prime95) that you can install to help you test this.
You will also need to install (CPU Thermometer) to test how much heat your laptop is generating during the process.
Torture Test on Prime95
Start a torture test on Prime95 and start measuring the temperatures of your laptop via CPU thermometer. Anything in the low to high 90s in not going to be good for your processor.
Step 2: Setting up hardware
You need to get an overclocking optimized motherboard, a robust power supply that can handle the increased power load that will be drawn by the laptop.
Set up an aggressive rapid heat cooling system. it’s advisable to add more fans or use a liquid cooling system.
Step 3: Adjust power settings
Here, we want to increase power that our laptop will be using to boost its performance.
Use the Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU to increase the power and current so that you match the capabilities of the power supply, motherboard and cooling system.
We then set up a new frequency for our target component by increasing the ratio.
Here we make use of the base clock. For a system with a default base clock of 100MHz, we would multiply the base clock by a ratio of 30 to achieve a new frequency of 3000MHZ. This will mean that we increase the ratio to 30.
However, for a graphics card, the overclocking ratio is multiplied by half the base clock.
For example, in the above system, we could get 50MHz multiplied by 30 when adjusting settings for the graphics card.
Step 4: Begin running your laptop stress tests
Use the The Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU) to test the stress on your system during these new settings.
Running one to two stress tests will help you determine stability, however, when you figure out that your system is unstable, it is time to increase the voltage supply.
You can increase the voltage in small portions of say 5mV, until an increase in voltage won’t affect system stability.
Change your voltage mode to adaptive and then finalize your voltage settings.
Step 5: Increase frequency
Repeat step 3 and achieve a frequency higher than you have achieved. When your system reaches the blue screen of death, it’s time you stopped. Once you go overboard, your processor may end up in flames.
By now you have overclocked your laptop with an Intel system.
How do you overclock a laptop with an AMD processor?
The AMD Phenom CPU and AMD-7 series chipset motherboard presents great options for fine tuning your laptop system to get better performance.
Use AMD dragon platform technology, the official AMD overdrive utility tool and fine tuned settings, to gain very impressive performance settings.
Note: You can use the AMD overdrive utility tool to do performance tuning, monitor the system and also do the test for AMD processors.
Let’s get an overview of what the AMD overdrive utility tool can do
- Take note of the target clock speeds, before applying any adjustments.
- CPU multiplier.
Check all the cores so that you gain control of available CPU cores. Use the slider to adjust the multiplier.
Take note of the target speed so that you won’t have to end in unstability zone for your laptop.
- Head to the HyperTransport(HT) reference clock. This usually adjusts the CPU core clock, CPU core clock, CPU NB clock (Memory controller),

- Next adjust the chipset voltage controls. Adjusting voltages can improve performance margins for the PCI bus, HyperTransport link and chipset core.

Step by step to overclock an AMD processor
From the advanced mode, the utility tool will give you full control over performance settings; that is clock frequency, clock multiplier, voltage plus memory timing.
Here are steps that you can follow while using the AMD overdrive utility tool to overclock your laptop that has AMD processor:
1. CPU tuning
Step 1: Open AMD overdrive tool and head to preference tab to advanced mode.
Step 2: Go to performance control section.
Step 3: Our area of focus is the CPU core multiplier and CPU VID monitor. Select all cores
Step 4: You can begin increase CPU and CPU VID. Do this in small bits while taking notice of overall effect on performance.You can begin by setting CPU multiplier from 15X to 16X; the CPU VID from 1.350V to 1.40V.
2. Stability test
The AMD overdrive utility tool gives you super general system stability assessment. It is so flexible that you can check stability for a single core or all cores at the same time. You can also select a single test to run.
You can set the time you want your test to run but for optimal results, it is advisable to run tests for 12-24hrs.

AMD processors have aCPU NB clock frequency that controls the Memory frequency and L3 cache speed. CPU NB has a notable impact on overall system performance. It can be set right in the BIOs menu.
Before tuning, set the CPU multiplier/voltage to a known stable value.
Step 1: Restart your computer and press ESC to go to the BIOS MENU.
Step 2: Set the CPU/NB frequency to the next available value.
Save settings and do a stability test.
Precautionary measures to be taken during overclocking
While overclocking gives super performance results, it is good to note that when done wrong, you risk losing/ frying your system.
Here are some precautionary measures you should put in place before attempting overclocking your laptop:
Keep temperatures below 140 degrees F
Since manufacturers warranties don’t cover an overclocked system, turn your system off as soon as temperatures reach 140 degrees F.
Attach advanced cooling mechanisms like liquid cooling systems to your laptop that can rapidly dissipate generated heat.
All processor manufacturers provide an overclocking manual, it is highly recommended that newbies go through it before attempting to overclock your system.
