  1. Mac OS X uses a checksum-a mathematical operation on the binary data that constitutes the file-to verify that the transferred file is a true copy of the original. A change of even a single byte will change the checksum value. If you get an “invalid checksum” error, the file is most likely irreparably corrupt and will need to be reacquired.
  2. Once open, type in “shasum -a ” followed by either 1 or 256, depending on whether you want to verify the downloaded file against a SHA-1 or SHA-256 checksum provided by its developer.

Sooner or Later every Mac user will need to make sure their MACOSX installer dmg is genuine and intact.

Since Apple doesn’t provide such place to check this information, here you are the SHA-1, MD5, CRC-32 (and in some cases Checksum) for all (known) macos x setup files.

Help me grow this list and let me know if you find any inconsistency.

Enjoy.

Disk Utility User Guide

The data in a disk image can be corrupted if a problem occurs while it’s being copied or if someone modifies it. You can see whether a disk image’s data has been corrupted by verifying its checksum, which is a calculation of all of its data. When a disk image is created, a checksum is computed and stored with the image. When you open the disk image, a checksum can be computed again and checked against the stored checksum. If the two checksums match, the disk image’s data hasn’t been corrupted.

You can choose when to compute and verify checksums. Be aware that doing so can take a long time.

  1. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose Images > Verify, then select the disk image that you want to verify.

  2. Click Verify, then click Done.
